With Respect and Gratitude

Grounded in our commitment to decolonization and liberation, we give thanks to the Indigenous lands that hold us, the teachers and communities who have shared their wisdom, and the artists whose creations help us share our story.

Land Acknowledgements

The Space for Kapwa team acknowledges the lands on which we conduct our work as unceded territories of the Tamien and Ohlone people. As settler-descendent, non-indigenous people, we recognize our privilege to be guests on this land, provide for ourselves from here, and benefit from the land's resources. As part of our commitment to decolonization, which in its simplest form means returning the land to its indigenous inhabitants, Space for Kapwa makes annual contributions to the Tamien Nation Voluntary Land Tax.

Kate acknowledges the native land of the Kānaka Maoli, where she is forever grateful to have been born and raised. The people and āina of Hawaii continue to teach Kate what it means to have a secure attachment to one’s natural environment and a healthy, right relationship with the living Earth and people whose land one occupies. For more info on ways you can have a better relationship with Hawai`i and its indigenous people, please visit Aina Momona.

Emma wishes to acknowledge and honor the native lands of the Hookooeko (Coastal Miwok) people, where she grew up and lived during her formative years. This land and its people, as well as the Muwekma Ohlone, Awaswas-speaking Uypi, Amah Mutsun, and Bakgatla, have provided Emma with the generous opportunity to thrive and explore the possibilities of peace, violence, erasure, humility, and healing all among the redwoods, the coasts, and the jacarandas.

For those reading who wish to do better at centering the land they occupy and its native people, we recommend visiting https://native-land.ca/ to start.
