About AAPI Mothers Support Group

This support group was started in October 2022 in order to address society's inherently oppressive systems that often do not prioritize the needs and lives of parents of color. AAPI mothers deserve our own space to find solidarity and healing with one another. Meetings are designed as a peer support group that normalizes and destigmatizes emotional challenges in motherhood and builds a supportive network among AAPI mothers. We welcome early-stage mothers (i.e. with children 5 and younger, approximately) of all genders who identify as Asian American/AAPI. Content/topics range at every session and are chosen based on what members themselves choose to bring to and engage with the group.

FAQ

Do we only talk about "AAPI stuff" in the group?

Yes and no. The group was founded with the belief that AAPI mothers matter and deserve our own space to talk about all things related to our experiences. Topics brought up may explicitly relate to being AAPI, while there will be other times when the relevance of being AAPI is more implicit or just in the background. In any case, as Audre Lorde said, "There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives.” In this group, you are always invited to reflect on how your identity as an AAPI-identified person intersects with your experience as a mother, and to share those insights with others... because that's how we form solidarity and community!

Can I bring my baby/child?

Of course, mama!

What if I join a meeting late and/or can't stay the whole time?

You're welcome to join if and whenever you are able! Same goes for if you can't stay for a whole meeting. We realize mothers are busy people, and we welcome you to come and leave as you need.

What if I can't make it every time?

That's totally ok--this is an open, drop-in group. Feel free to join if and whenever you are able.

What if I only want to listen and not talk?

We're not always in the mood to talk, and that's ok! Listening and learning from others is encouraged, always. While we believe in the value of voicing our own experiences in this space, we also respect any reasons why it may not feel right for you that day.
